Adur's towns and villages get a spring clean

Released: Monday, 09 March 2026

Adur's pedestrian areas and green spaces will be getting a spring clean this March to help make them more attractive to visitors and residents.

Running alongside Keep Britain Tidy's The Great British Spring Clean, which takes place from 13th to 29th March 2026, we will begin an intensive refreshment programme to improve the look and feel of the most well-used areas in the district.

Work will include a large-scale jet washing programme of the paving at Laylands Parade in Fishersgate, Queens Parade and Queensway in Lancing, East Street and High Street in Shoreham, Hillbarn Parade in Sompting and Southwick Square, starting from 17th March 2026.

Waste, including tyres and shopping trolleys, will be removed from the banks of the River Adur by West Sussex Fire & Rescue crews and disposed of by our waste team.

We will also be working with businesses in Shoreham to offer them a chance to adopt one of the planters in High Street, and with Lancing Parish Council to refresh the planters on Crabtree Parade, North Road and South Street ready for spring.

The Great British Spring Clean is the nation's biggest mass-action environmental campaign. Each year, more than 400,000 volunteers clear litter from streets, parks and beaches.

To make it easier for residents to take part, we are refreshing our free litter-picking boxes with new vinyl covers, locks and equipment.

The boxes contain litter pickers, bag hoops, bags and high visibility vests and can be accessed for free by anyone in the local community. To find out where they are located and how to use them, see:

We regularly undertake repairs and maintenance to playground equipment across Adur, but for The Great British Spring Clean a popular giraffe sculpture that resides in Halewick Lane playground, situated near Lancing Ring, will be getting a new paint job.

The benches at Coronation Green in Shoreham will also be replaced ahead of the installation of a new public art project called Shadow Ships.

Councillor Becky Allinson, Adur's cabinet member for regeneration and the economy, said:

“As well as ongoing work to keep our towns, villages and green spaces looking their best, we will be joining forces with partners, businesses and community groups to freshen up some of our most used spaces as we look forward to the opportunity to spend more time outdoors now spring is on the way.

“Adur is lucky to have a great range of community groups, many of which are planning their own activities as part of The Great British Spring Clean and are always looking for new volunteers. And to make litter-picking easier and more accessible we have refurbished our free litter-picking boxes, so residents can undertake their own clean-up at a time that suits them.”

Residents who want to take part in a community litter-picking event as part of The Great British Spring Clean, can find details of existing litter-picking groups, see:
